Procedure of Registration of Domain Name in India – An Analysis
Domain registration is the process of registering a domain name which will identify one or more IP addresses with a name that will be easier to remember and use in URL’s in order to identify a particular webpage. The person or business who registers domain name is called Domain Name Registrant. It therefore requires utilizing the services of a domain name registrar, an ICANN or national ccTLD accredited company that has the rights and authority to register domain names. Registrars help individuals and business organization to register a domain name that has an extension like .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, .us, etc. In 1993, the U.S. Department of Commerce created Inter-NIC to maintain a central database that contains all the registered domain names and the associated IP addresses (other countries maintain their own NICs (Network Information Centre). Network Solutions, a member of Inter-NIC, was chosen to administer and maintain the number of Internet domain names and IP addresses that is growing day by day. This central database is copied and sent to Top Level Domain (TLD) that servers around the world and therefore creates the primary routing tables used by every computer that connects to the Internet. The competition created by the shared registration system enables end users or individuals to choose from many registrars offering a wide range of related services at varying prices. The Information is maintained by the domain name registries, who contracts with domain registrars to provide registration services to the public. Individual or business selects a registrar to provide the registration service, and that registrar becomes the designated registrar for the domain chosen by the user. The designated registrar has the sole authority to modify or delete information about domain names in a central registry database. An end user may switch registrars invoking a domain transfer process between the registrars involved, that is governed by specific domain name transfer policies. Although the designated registrar is the only authority or entity that can modify or delete information regarding domain names in the central registry, there are many domain resellers that allow you to sell domains. Individuals need not become a designated registrar in order to sell and register domains.
Many registrars offer registration through reseller affiliates. An individual registers either directly with a registrar, or indirectly through one or more layers of resellers. For a domain name, the maximum period of registration is 10 years. Some registrars may offer longer periods say, up to 100 years, but this may involve the registrar renewing the registration for their customer; and the 100-year registration would not be in the official registration database.
Procedure for Registration of Domain Name:
After choosing a domain name, they need to submit their domain name registration request to a registrar. They need to submit the following information to the registrar:
· The desired domain name
· Personal information like name and contact information (including email address, physical address and contact phone number) for the domain’s registrant, administrative and billing contacts.
· Term of desired domain name
· Payment information
Once this information is given to the registrar, they will then initiate the domain name registration process. The registrar will then send domain name request, and the contact and technical information of the domain name to the registry.
Thereafter, the registry files the contact information. The registry also adds their domain zone files to the master servers. These master servers tell other servers on the Internet where the website is stored. Finally, the domain is considered registered and can be used when all information has been updated.
