Nagaland Judicial Service Exam Grade III Civil Judge Syllabus & Overview

The Nagaland Judicial Service Examination is conducted every year by the Gauhati High Court for Grade III cadre recruitment, which is at a Civil Judge level or equivalent.


The notification is published on the High Court’s official website at : kohimahighcourt.gov.in and / or the website of the state’s public service commission (If the exam is conducted by the PSC) at Nagaland Public Service Commission


Eligibility and Age Limit – Nagaland Judicial Service Exam – Grade III


(a) Must be holder of degree in law granted by a recognized University established by law in India

(b) Must not have completed, as on the last date fixed for receipt of applications, 38 years of age in the case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes and 35 years of age in the case of other candidates


Syllabus for Nagaland Judicial Service Grade III Civil Judge – Preliminary Exam


The candidates will have to appear in a Preliminary Examination (objective type multiple choices) of 100 marks (2 hours duration). From the rank wise list of marks of the Preliminary Examination, 10 (ten) candidates will be called against l (one) vacancy in the ratio of 1:10 for the Final Written Examination.


However, the High Court reserves the right to fix cut off mark in the Preliminary Examination and call only those candidates to appear in the Final Written Examination who obtain the cut off mark as may be fixed by the High Court.

  4. Constitution of India,

  5. Code of Civil Procedure,

  6. Transfer of Property Act,

  7. Indian Contract Act,

  8. Indian Penal Code,

  9. Criminal Procedure Code ,

  10. Indian Evidence Act,

  11. Law of Torts.


Syllabus for Nagaland Judicial Service Exam Grade III Civil Judge – Main Exam


All candidates who obtain 60 (sixty) percent or more marks or corresponding grade in the Final Written Examination shall be eligible for viva-voce of 70 (seventy) marks. Provided that Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates who obtain 50 (fifty) percent or more marks or corresponding grade in the Final Written Examination shall be eligible for viva-voce. This would be subject to the ratio of 1:3 of the rank wise list of marks obtained by the candidates in the Final Written Examination.


(i) Paper on English (100 Marks)

a) Essay Writing b) Precis Writing c) Grammar etc.


(ii) General Knowledge (100 Marks)

a) Objective Type b) Aptitude Test.


(iii) Law Paper – I (100 Marks)

a) Constitution of India, b) Code of Civil Procedure c) Transfer of Property Act. d) Indian Contract Act.


(iv) Law Paper – II (100 Marks)

a) Indian Penal Code b) Criminal Procedure Code c) Indian Evidence Act. d) Law of Torts.


(v) Interview, Viva Voce (70 marks)


In the viva-voce, out of 70 (seventy) marks the candidates will have to secure minimum 60% marks. Selection of candidates shall be made on the basis of marks obtained in the Final Written Examination and viva-voce, subject to the cut off mark indicated above.

However, final selection shall be made subject to overall suitability to be decided by the High Court.


All candidates who obtain 60% or more marks, subject to securing at least 45% Marks individually in Paper I, II, III & IV shall be eligible for Viva-voce.


Provided that SC/ST Candidates who obtain 50% or more marks, subjects to securing minimum 40% Marks individually in Paper-I, II, III, & IV shall be called for Viva-voce.

The ratio in which Candidates shall be called for Viva-voce is 1:3 (three Candidates against 1 post) subject to Marks obtained as stated above. The final evaluation will be in order of Merit subject to overall suitability.
